Tools Recommended and Supplies Needed:
1. Surface Preparation
Installing panels over existing surfaces requires no preliminary preparation besides making sure the surface is cleaned and free of foreign objects such as, dirt dust or grease that can cause poor adhesion. Wall paneling have finishes that are considered moisture resistant and should not be installed in areas subject to moisture.
2. Cutting Panels
Flexboo™ paneling can be cut in any direction. For horizontal cuts, roll the paneling tight and cut using a simple hand saw, saber saw or chop saw. For vertical cuts, use a utility knife and cut between the strips. Many a good paneling job has been ruined by inaccurate cutting for outlet boxes or heat registers. One method is to mark the outlet with chalk. Then, place the properly cut panel on the wall and tap at the outlet location. This will transfer an image to the back of the panel and indicate the area for cutting. A 1/4” gap around the area will provide room for spacing and adjustment-the faceplate will cover up the extra space Using a good cabinetry type blade will give you a clean cut. A dull blade can cause the paneling to tear.
3. Panel Installation
Once the application surface has been prepared, pre-drill 1" in on the top edge of the paneling on the left and right side. Apply Liquid Nail construction adhesive to the cloth back of the tambour paneling. This should be done in a bead 1/4” in diam- eter, running all four sides 3/4" in from the edge, then in rows 8" apart horizontally from top to bottom on the back of the paneling. This should allow for approximately 12 rows of adhe- sive to be applied. Let adhesive set for 10 to 15 minutes, and then press firmly with even pressure to the entire surface. Using 1" panel nails set the two nails in place. Check periodi- cally to be sure the paneling stays in full contact with the wall surface while drying. The adhesive should immediately hold the paneling, but will fully cure in 24 hours. Note: spread rate on liquid nails is approximately 1 tube per 4 x 8 panels.
Baseboards and Trim: Using bamboo split poles are a great way of finishing the wall. You can place 2” or 3” half rounds on the top and bottom of the paneling. In addition, run splits vertically spaced every 4’ or. These can then be fastened in place with adhesive or pre-drilled and set in place with nails or screws.
